Diabetes is a disease caused by excess glucose or sugar in the blood glucose. Blood glucose is the main source of energy in the human body, and is generated from food eaten.

Insulin, a hormone produced by the pancreas, helps glucose in food get into body cells to be used for energy.

You can manage Diabetes and live a healthy life by taking care of yourself daily and feeling confident.

Your self-care plan may include these steps:

Restraining from smoking is necessary for people with diabetes. This is because, both smoking and diabetes narrow blood vessels.

If you quit smoking;

  •  you will reduce risk of heart attack, stroke, nerve disease, kidney disease, and amputation
  • your blood circulation will improve
  • you may find it easier being physically active

Drink water instead of sugar-sweetened beverages.

Choose foods that are lower in calories, saturated fat, trans fat, sugar, and salt.

Ask your doctor if you need to take aspirin to prevent a heart attack or stroke.

Let your doctor know if you cannot afford your medicines or if you have any side effects from your medicines.
